Deepressionist: The Next Movement

Local artists explore truth in art and what it means to be an artist.

On Friday, February 24, 2006, local artists Overstreet Ducasse, Adrian Rhodes, and Roosevelt Watson will exhibit their work in the show Deepressionist: The Next Movement at Boomtown, located at 140 West Monroe Street in Hemming Plaza, downtown.

Organized by Ducasse, Rhodes, and Watson, whose work has been featured at The Ritz Theater and LaVilla Museum, The Karpeles Manuscript Library and Museum, Florida Community College of Jacksonville, and Emanuel Holliness Church in Tampa, the show’s title was conceived out of the frustrations of many local artists. Like parents waiting for the birth of a new child, many local artists believe Jacksonville is on the verge of a cultural Renaissance, but the birthing process can be painful.

Considering realism, impressionist, cubism, and other movements of the past, the question arose; where is art going? “We want to find the truth in art,” says Ducasse. “What it means to be an artist. To find the similarities and differences in how artists live and communicate… Artists today embrace different techniques and mediums. We embrace technology. We are among the first generation of artists to have technology at our command. We are diverse and practice many styles.” Ducasse, Rhodes, and Watson will hope to express these ideas through their art.

According to Ducasse, the word Deepressionist in the show’s title expresses the depth of thought and imagination and artist must obtain to create. The title also addresses the “artist’s depression” which may stem from stereotypes, the lack of appreciation and support from the community, or lack of knowledge by artists of past artistic masters.

If no one buys your art, then you can't make it as an artist. That's what a man on the street said to me the other day, when I asked him, " how did you become homeless". Is this the fate of a starving artist in Jacksonville, or will we find our way out of, "DEEPRESSION". The only way I can keep my peace of mind is by creating visual works of art. Sometimes I don't have money
for canvas, so I paint on raw materials like wood and drywall. This might not be the ideal canvas for most artist, but to a Deepressionist it is very usefull. Sometimes we use latex paint,because it is acrylic and you get alot for the buck. This leaves you with more money for the bus and extra gas money. I don't think that a Deepressinist coud make it, with out a love for the creation of art.
